A lot of people enjoy to eat out every night of the week, but for the ones who like to do everything themselves, grocery shopping is a thing you can't do without. Fun fact is that the first thing you're welcomed by in Luga Airport is a big advert from LIDL welcoming you to the island.
With 5 major stores around Malta, it is the most commonly known chain on the island. They maintain the all to known discount theme. Definitely not a posh place, but big quantities and well assorted for daily grocery shopping.
Tower Supermarket in Sliema is a classic, somewhat modern supermarket. They're well assorted, even also for Scandinavians. It has a bit of a funny setup with 3 stories where things are sometimes oddly placed, but despite this they offer daily deliveries, a functioning website and a loyalty program.
For people use to larger assortments or specialties, the SMART Supermarket and Arcadia are the placed to go. SMART is a more down to earth supermarket with a huge selection of different specialties and serviced areas: Butcher (incl. Halal), cheese/cold cuts, fish & vegetables. Price here are reasonable cheap.
Arcadia being situated in the prominent Portomaso Complex in St. Julians, find themselves in the high end price wise. However they offer some quality products that usually can be hard to get hold of. Same goes for the Chain Supermarket, where one is placed in the newly build The Point Shopping center in Tigne Point, Sliema.
Also worth mentioning is the Scotts Supermarket chain which is basically scattered all over Malta.
Overall most of the major supermarkets in Malta offer: Free delivery, serviced butcher & cold cuts counters and loyalty programs for the frequent shopper.
